2009 Highway Reports

January 13, 2009 - 9:20pm - Unit #220 assisted a female motorist with a flat tire on northbound I—55 past Butler Hill Road. A tow truck was already en route to the scene when he arrived. 220 saw the flat tire on the left front driver’s side and thought nothing of it. However, when the AAA operator showed up, he changed the tire on the right front passenger’s side. 220 informed the driver that there was a flat on her side of the car, which she failed to notice. This prompted the AAA guy to call for a AAA tow truck. The vehicle was eventually picked up and towed off.

January 13, 2009 - 11:00pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a motorist on eastbound I-64 east of Ballas Road. The female driver told 220 that her father was on the way and that he wasn’t really needed. However, she asked him to stay until he arrived just to be safe. The woman’s father later showed up to change the tire. The woman thanked 220 for helping.

January 14, 2009 - 7:35pm - Unit #220 assisted a stranded motorist with car trouble on Ladue Road east of I-270. The female motorist had just pulled off to the shoulder when 220 arrived. She had a cell phone, but the “3” did not work. 220 gave her his phone and a list of towing companies in the area to calm her nerves. Within minutes, the woman found a towing company and patiently waited for it to arrive. During that time, a Creve Coeur Police officer stopped and asked 220 if everything was okay, and 220 informed him what was going on. The officer relayed to dispatch about the motorist and drove off. 220 waited with the motorist until the tow truck showed up, performed some traffic control to assist the tow truck operator and left the scene once the vehicle was moved.

January 15, 2009 - 11:00pm - Unit #220 assisted tractor trailer drivers and traveling motorists with traffic control and verbal instructions while working near the site of a fatal accident that was on northbound I-55 near Butler Hill Road. All northbound traffic was diverted for several hours while the accident was investigated off onto Meramec Bottom Road and then to Hwy 61/67. 220 turned his lights & CB radio on near the intersection and transmitted directions to truckers as to how to get back to I-55 northbound from his location. All lanes of I-55 northbound were re-opened to traffic 30 minutes later.

January 15, 2009 - 11:45pm - Unit #220 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on I-270 northbound just north of I-64. When he arrived, another vehicle was already on the scene and the owner of that vehicle was assisting the other with the flat tire. 220 turned on his lights and did some traffic control in the right lane while the men changed the tire.

January 16, 2009 - 12:05am - On a bitterly cold night, 220 spotted and assisted two stranded motorists in a vehicle on northbound I-270 north of I-64. The temperature was 2F, with a wild chill of -12F when the vehicle was spotted. At first, it looked as if nobody was in the vehicle because the hazard lights were on and the back window was iced over. But when 220 walked up to the driver’s side door, he found two occupants freezing in the cold vehicle. The vehicle had run out of fuel, and the occupants had been sitting in the freezing car for over 90 minutes. Help was supposed to have been en route, but had not showed yet. According to one of the occupants, a police officer had stopped by one time to see how they were doing and never returned. 220 and the two occupants retreated to the warmth of 220’s truck and stayed there until help arrived an hour later. The two occupants were very thankful and appreciative of 220’s help.

January 16, 2009 - 10:55pm - Unit #220 spotted a stranded motorist with vehicle trouble on eastbound I-70 near the Earthcity Expressway. 220 gave the man a list of towing companies in the area and waited patiently for the tow to arrive. A few minutes later, a St Louis County police officer arrived and asked if everything was okay and 220 acknowledged it was. 220 left the scene to the police officer and went on his way.

January 16, 2009 - 11:35pm - Unit #220 assisted at a traffic accident on Highway 141 at Schneider Drive in front of the Quiktrip gas station. The local fire department was already on the scene clearing up the mess, but no Jefferson County Sherriff was on the scene. 220 blocked the left turn lane with cones and his vehicle while the fire department did their thing. A fireman then told him to leave the area ten minutes later. According to the fireman, he did not want traffic control at the intersection. Five minutes later, 220 witnessed two vehicles trying to make a left turn through the accident scene as he sat parked on the QT parking lot.
