November 2004 Highway Reports

November 1, 2004 - 10:25am - Unit #220 assisted motorists of a non-injury vehicle accident on I-70 east of 370 in St. Charles County. 220 noticed two vehicles on the shoulder and one vehicle sideways blocking the middle of the interstate with no emergency equipment on the scene. 220 decided to use his vehicle to protect and move traffic away from the middle lanes until St. Charles County Sheriff Deputies arrived on the scene. Once the officers arrived on the scene, 220 left the area and began to warn truckers of the upcoming accident CB Channel 19.

November 5, 2004 - 11:30pm - Unit #220 assisted with a multi-vehicle accident on I-270 north of Page Avenue. When he arrived on the scene, police and fire were already there but 220 spotted a non-injury vehicle accident on the shoulder just south of the accident and went to investigate. 220 asked if there were any injuries, which there were none, and proceeded to call the Creve Coeur Police Department. The dispatcher contacted St Louis County Police and the Missouri State Highway Patrol and both sent officers to the scene within five minutes. A Missouri State Highway Patrol officer thanked 220 for his assistance.

November 8, 2004 - 2:10pm - As Unit #220 was returning eastbound on I-44 from his trip to Branson, MO, he heard a call over CB Channel 19 about debris in the roadway near mile marker 140. Since 220 was near the 145 mile marker, he turned around and headed back to the scene. When 220 arrived, he saw a Laclede County Sheriff deputy picking up lumber off of the highway and tossing them to the shoulder. However, the deputy missed two of the pieces and 220 stopped to toss them out of the way. As 220 got closer to the Sheriffs deputy vehicle, he asked him if he needed any further assistance. The deputy told 220 that things would be okay and 220 left the scene after the deputy got back into his car.

November 18, 2004 - 5:40pm - Unit #02 was heading west on I-44 at I-270 when he came upon a two car accident blocking the right two lanes of the highway. Police were not on the scene yet so 02 stopped in the lanes and turned on his lights. He called the Sunset Hills Police and told the dispatcher about the "10-50J3". Since 02 was talking 10-codes with the dispatcher, she asked him what agency he was with. He said he was with REACT so she dispatched the accident with added information to the responding officers that an off duty REACT officer was already on the scene. Once the police arrived 02 left the scene. There were no injuries.

November 24, 2004 - 9:15pm - Unit #220 assisted Sunset Hills Police with a multiple vehicle accident with no injuries on an icy overpass at Geyer Road over I-44 in Sunset Hills, MO. Four vehicles were hit by one vehicle that bounced back and forth across the overpass. A fifth vehicle also became involved with the accident when the driver decided to go around a police car that was blocking the road and smashed into a utility truck that had suffered one hit already. 220 helped shut down the road so that the wreckage could be removed and so a MODOT salt truck could de-ice the road. Two hours later, the road was reopened to traffic in both directions. The Sunset Hills Police thanked 220 for his assistance.

November 24, 2004 - 10:48pm - Unit #220 called in a non-injury accident to Des Peres Police that was situated on Manchester Road west of I-270.

November 25, 2004 - 3:00pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a vehicle on I-70 west of Lake St Louis. The driver was having trouble getting the flat tire off so 220 offered to change it. Once the tire was changed, everything seemed in order. 220 waited for the vehicle to clear the scene but the driver opened her door and headed back towards 220’s truck. The vehicle died and would not turn over. 220 flipped his truck so that it faced westbound and tried to jump it. After a few minutes, the van finally started up. The driver thanked 220 for his help, and went on her way.
