May 2004 Highway Reports

May 1, 2004 - 12:00pm - Unit #220 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on Hwy 40 west of McKnight Road in Ladue. The driver needed a jack & a tire iron, so 220 loaned his to the driver. When the driver finished, he thanked 220 for his assistance and then went on his way.

May 3, 2004 - 9:50pm - Unit #220 came across a vehicle that was in an accident on I-55 southbound, just south of the weigh scales near Barnhart. 220 contacted unit #65 on his Nextel and asked if he would get the phone number for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, which he did. 220 then attempted to contact Jefferson County Police to let them know of the accident. By the time he dialed the number, a Missouri State Highway Patrol officer arrived on the scene. 220 stayed with the MSHP officer through the entire ordeal (At one point, the officer asked 220 for his assistance regarding the appearance of the individuals). As it turned out, there were two people in the vehicle, one female and one male. The female was driving and apparently hit a barbed wire fence somewhere in the area of I-55, but attempted to leave the scene. The male passenger hit his head during the accident, but didn’t require medical attention. The vehicle had to be towed. The female driver got a summons for leaving the scene of an accident.

May 17, 2004 - 9:45pm - Unit #220 spotted a small brush fire on the side of I-70 west of Lindbergh Blvd and contacted Bridgeton Police immediately. Pattonville Fire District Pumper #4810 arrived on the scene and put the fire out. A Bridgeton Police officer arrived five minutes later and asked 220 what he saw. 220 left the scene after providing the officer with his answers.

May 17, 2004 - 10:15pm - Unit #220 came across a two-vehicle accident on 370 at Exit 5 in St. Charles. Emergency Personnel were already on the scene so 220 decided to assist by switching over to CB Channel 19 and warn truck drivers of the accident ahead. One vehicle was up into the fast lane median wall and the second vehicle was on the far outside shoulder, which made for a tricky situation but not impossible. A majority of the traffic got the message.

May 17, 2004 - 11:05pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a stranded couple in their vehicle on eastbound I-70 near the I-270 interchange. The driver stated that she had a tow truck en route, but if something happened she’d like to have someone else to call. 220 provided the driver with a tow truck list and waited until help arrived on scene. The young couple was heading back home to Granite City when the electrical system went out on the car.

May 18, 2004 - 9:15pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a driver that ran out of fuel on Highway 141, south of Ladue Road. The driver stated he had help on the way so 220 stayed with the vehicle until his friend returned with fuel. He then thanked 220 for his assistance and went on his way.

May 19, 2004 - 9:55pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a stranded motorist on Hwy 40 east of Clayton Road. The driver’s side tire was flat and was too close to the right lane to be changed. The driver stated she had help on the way. 220 decided to inform Ladue Police that there might be a problem changing the tire, so they sent an officer to check the scene. When the officer arrived, the driver’s help showed up and 220 explained the entire situation. The car ended up being left overnight.

May 23, 2004 - 9:45am - While on his way to the Creve Coeur Days event, unit #65 came upon a stalled car blocking the left lane of eastbound Olive Rd. at Craig Rd. 65 called unit 220 over Nextel and asked him to call the Creve Coeur Police. 65 stopped behind the motorist with his lights on. She told 65 she was out of gas. 65 waited behind her until the officer arrived. 65 informed him that she was out of gas. He told the officer he would go get a gallon. The officer waited behind the motorist while 65 went to get a gallon of gas. 65 returned five minutes later and poured the gas into her tank. She started the car, thanked 65, payed him for the gas, and went on her way. The officer thanked 65 for helping.

May 27, 2004 - 8:00pm - Some severe storms rolled through the area earlier in the evening. Unit 220 was first on the scene of what was initially called out as power lines on a vehicle. Unit 220 instead assisted a Jefferson County Sheriffs Deputy with closure of Old Sugar Creek Road about 400 yards south of Schumacher Rd in Jefferson County due to downed power lines and a large pine tree that had fallen onto a stretch of roadway. Ameren/UE arrived about 9:30pm but power had not yet been fully restored to all residents in the area. By 11:30pm, power had been restored to most residents that lived in the area. 220 contacted Jefferson County dispatch and informed them that he would have to leave shortly and someone would have to come take his place soon. Nobody came. 220 called back at 12:30am and told the dispatcher he was leaving and that the street would be opened up to traffic (even though the power lines were still across the roadway and the tree was still blocking the road). He suggested that public works be contacted and sent out to the location with signs stating that the road was closed. It is undetermined what happened once 220 left the area.

May 29, 2004 - 2:15pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a motorist on I-35, 25 miles north of Bethany, MO. The motorist suffered a blown tire and the friend he was riding with left to get a replacement tire. 220 offered his cell phone to the motorist and waited until the driver returned. The man thanked 220 for his assistance.
